Eagles Drop Hard Fought Contest At Nebraska Tuesday Night

Lincoln, Neb. – A late run by Nebraska proved to be the difference as Winthrop fell 80-73 at undefeated Nebraska, Tuesday night in non-conference men's basketball action.
 
WINTHROP (3-4, 0-0 Big South)
  • Kareer Rozier (14 points, 2 reobunds, assist)
  • Daylen Berry (12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists)
  • Pharrell Boyogueno (11 points, 6 rebounds, assist, block)
NEBRASKA (7-0, 0-0 Big Ten)
  • Rienk Mast (31 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, block, steal)
  • Pryce Sandfort (10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, steal)
  • Cale Jacobsen (11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, steal)

FIRST HALF
  • Eagles opened the scoring as Isaiah Wilson drove to the rim and scored
  • Nebraska's first basket came at the 18:19 mark as Jamarques Lawrence dropped in a free throw line jumper
  • Huskers grabbed their first lead at the 17:35 mark as Rienk Mast knocked down a straight away three
  • The lead was short-lived as Daylen Berry dropped in a three on the ensuring possession
  • Nebraska built a five point advantage with 13:32 left in the half after a Cale Jacobsen jumper, but Kareem Rozier answered with a triple to make it a one possession game again
  • After a defensive stop the Eagles tied the game at 12-12 as Tai Hamilton found Seifeldin Hendawy who finished at the rim
  • The Huskers led by six with 9:23 on the clock after Mast scored inside
  • The Eagles cut the deficit in half with another three from Rozier and scored the next five points to regain the lead with 6:51 left in the half as Tommy Kamarad buried a three to lead 25-23
  • A three from Pharrell Boyogueno with 2:37 left in the half put the Eagles up by two possession at 34-30
  • Eagles were able to hold on to lead at the break, 36-32 as there were eight lead changes in the opening 20 minutes
 
SECOND HALF
  • Nebraska came out of the half connecting on back-to-back threes to take a 38-36 lead
  • The lead was short lived as Berry dropped in a three to put Winthrop back in front 39-38
  • Pryce Sandfort gave Nebraska a 44-42 lead with a straight away three at the 15:54 mark
  • That three sparked a 6-0 spurt that pushed the lead to 47-42, but ended on a Logan Duncomb basket inside with 13:51 to play
  • Winthrop pulled within 49-47 with 11:33 remaining as Boyogueno knocked down a straight on three after the defense had just made a stop with a block by Hamilton
  • Huskers answered the Boyogueno three with a corner triple from Connor Essegian for a five point lead
  • Nebraska pushed its lead to eight points after Mast got a couple of friend bounces on a straight away three, but Rozier answered right away with a three to cut the deficit back to five with 7:52 to play
  • Eagles shooting woes caught up with them with seven minutes to play as Mast's tip-in and three-pointer back-to-back pushed the Nebraska lead to double-digits
  • Following a Winthrop turnover, Mast knocked down another three for eight consecutive points and a 67-54 lead with 5:35 remaining
  • Winthrop scored five straight to get the deficit back to single-digits with 4:31 on the clock after two free throws from Rozier and another three from Boyogueno
  • Mast connected on his seventh three of the game for an 11-point advantage with 3:21 remaining but the Eagles responded with eight straight points to pull within a single-possession at the 1:45 mark after another Rozier three
  • Sandford scored for a five point lead as the Eagles tried to come right back with a bucket as Rozier drove and couldn't get the shot to fall as Duncomb's tip was unable to drop in as well
  • With 49.4 seconds left Jacobsen scored off the drive for a 76-69 lead and held on for the win

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Winthrop won the battle on the boards 48-38, with a 17-10 advantage on the offensive glass
  • Eagles finished the game at 38 percent from the floor while Nebraska shot 42 percent
  • Each team knocked down 13 threes as the Eagles were 13-of-42 and the Huskers were 13-for-38
  • Nebraska finished with the advantage in the paint 32-22
  • Both teams combined for just two fast break points

NOTABLES
  • Eagles led at the half, which was the first lead over a Power 4 team since leading Virginia Tech 25-23 on Nov. 11, 2024
  • The game saw a total of six ties and 11 lead changes
  • Rozier connected on four threes for the second straight game
  • Duncomb tied his career-high in rebounds with 10
  • Eagles had 13 threes in the game, the fourth straight game with 11 or more threes
