Eagles Cruise Past Clinton College at Home

yROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team never let up, overwhelming their visitors from the opening tip, rolling to an 82-29 win at home. 

Winthrop set a new high mark since 2010 of 28 steals in a contest, shattering the previous mark of 21 steals. 


FIRST QUARTER 

  • Winthrop came out firing, stacking up a 20-10 lead with its most efficient offensive frame of the night. 
  • The Eagles attacked the paint early and often, racking up 14 interior points before the quarter closed. 
  • Clinton struggled to handle Winthrop's pressure, committing nine turnovers that quickly turned into transition points. 
  • Winthrop's bench showed, with production outpacing Clinton's entire scoring output. 

SECOND QUARTER 

  • The Eagles broke the game open with a 22-7 quarter, burying Clinton with defensive pressure that forced 14 first-half turnovers. 
  • Winthrop's frontcourt controlled the glass, adding nine more defensive boards in the period to limit Clinton to single-shot possessions. 
  • Second-chance points continued to tilt the game, with the Eagles capitalizing on five more offensive rebounds. 
  • Winthrop entered halftime firmly in command, doubling up Clinton and controlling every statistical category. 

THIRD QUARTER 

  • Winthrop's defense slammed the door even tighter, holding Clinton to just five points while widening the margin to 65-22. 
  • The Eagles added eight fastbreak points as turnovers turned into runouts. 
  • Perimeter shooting found rhythm as Winthrop knocked down two threes in the quarter to stretch the floor. 
  • Clinton's offense mustered just one field goal in the stanza. 

FOURTH QUARTER 

  • The Eagles kept their foot on the gas, outscoring Clinton 17-7 to close out the rout. 
  • Winthrop's bench piled on with 15 of the quarter's points. 
  • The Eagles added six more second-chance points, continuing to dominate the offensive glass. 
  • Winthrop sealed the 82-29 final with halfcourt execution on both ends. 

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 

  • Winthrop outscored Clinton in every quarter, including a 43–17 second half. 
  • The Eagles dominated the rebounding battle and repeatedly turned offensive boards into points. 
  • Winthrop's defense forced Clinton into double-digit turnovers every quarter. 
  • The Eagle bench delivered 39 points, outscoring Clinton's entire total. 
  • Multiple Eagles collected career-high marks, including Tocarra Johnson, Ryiah Wilson, Mya Hamilton, and Persais Williams
  • Ryiah Wilson collected eight steals in the contest, the most since Jada Ryce in December of 2023 with ten.  
  • The last time an Eagle freshman had eight steals was Dequesha McClanahan in 2010.
