COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Winthrop never found a rhythm against a relentless South Carolina defense, dropping a 106-56 road decision on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles showed flashes behind strong outings from
Madison Ruff and
Mya Pierfax, but the Gamecocks' size and tempo buried the visitors early.
FIRST QUARTER
- Madison Ruff got Winthrop on the board at 9:33 with a driving layup for a 2-0 start, but South Carolina immediately countered with a 10-0 run.
- The Eagles battled back behind a three from Ryiah Wilson and an inside finish from Naomi Wilson, trimming the deficit to 14-9 at the 5:26 mark.
- Pierfax struck from deep at 1:57, but the Gamecocks' transition scoring pushed their lead to 28-15 by the end of the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- Winthrop opened the frame with baskets from Ruff and Porter, but South Carolina's defensive pressure produced repeated scoring chances the other way.
- The Eagles were held without a field goal over the final 4:30 of the half as the Gamecocks closed on a 14-0 burst to take a 61-27 lead into the break.
THIRD QUARTER
- Winthrop responded with its best stretch of the day, hanging 18 points in the period.
- Pierfax drilled back-to-back threes midway through the quarter as Ruff added a tough finish in traffic as the Eagles cut the margin slightly to 85-45.
- Amourie Porter added two late buckets, giving Winthrop momentum heading into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Persais Williams opened the quarter with a free-throw line jumper, but the Gamecocks maintained full control.
- Pierfax buried her fourth three of the game at 6:01, and Cori Lard added a transition layup, but South Carolina's depth closed out the final stretch to seal the 106-56 result.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Mya Pierfax led Winthrop with 16 points, hitting 4-of-8 from three.
- Madison Ruff added 10 points on 4-for-10 shooting.
- Amourie Porter chipped in 8 points and 4 rebounds, while Naomi Wilson added 6 points and 4 boards.
- Winthrop shot 35% from the floor, going 7-for-23 from three.
- South Carolina forced 15 Winthrop turnovers and converted them into consistent transition offense.
