Eagles Battle In One Point Loss At #21 Arkansas

Fayetteville, Ark. – Winthrop men's basketball came up just shy of its upset bid in an 84-83 loss at 21st-ranked Arkansas, Tuesday night inside Bud Walton Arena.

  • Meleek Thomas (26 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals)
  • Trevon Brazile (14 points, 8 rebounds, assist, 4 blocks, steal)
  • Nick Pringler (13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks)

FIRST HALF
  • Kody Clouet opened the scoring in the game as the Eagles won the tip and 14 seconds later he buried a right wing three
  • Arkansas answered with a three of its own as Karter Knox knocked it down
  • The game was tied 11-11 at the 14:54 mark as Pharrell Boyogueno came off the bench and dropped in a three for the lead
  • The Eagles took a four point lead after Kareem Rozier dropped in a three from the right wing with just over 13 minutes left in the half
  • Tommy Kamarad gave the Eagles a five point lead at the 12:06 mark with a straight away three
  • Arkansas scored four straight points to make it a one point game but the team's stalled offensively for a 2-3 minutes span before Pharrell Boyogueno's dunk off an inbound play to lead 26-23 with 7:43 to play in the half
  • The Razorbacks used an 11-0 run to take a 36-28 lead with 4:30 left in the half, but a Kody Clouet three stopped the run
  • Hogs answered right away with a three of their own from Darius Acuff Jr. to push the lead back to eight
  • The Eagles made it a one possession game with 2:03 left as Daylen Berry found Clouet up top as he dropped in another three to trail 39-36
  • Seifeldin Hendawy dropped in a left-handed hook with 32 seconds to play in the half
  • Arkansas had the final possession but a strong defensive effort kept it a two point game at the half as Boyogueno blocked the shot as the Eagles corralled the defensive rebound as time expired

SECOND HALF
  • Razorbacks opened the scoring in the second half as Maleek Thomas drained a three for a 46-41 lead
  • Trailing by six, Rozier drove and scored to cut it to four and a Berry three made it a one point game with 17:05 remaining
  • The lead was seven for Arkansas with 14:21 left but the Eagles used a 7-0 run to tie the game at 57-57 with 12:46 remaining
  • The run started with Hendawy following his own miss with a basket inside followed by Logan Duncomb scoring at the rim and a right wing three from Rozier
  • Arkansas regained the lead briefly as Thomas knocked down a jumper, but Rozier buried another three to put Winthrop in front 60-59 with just under 12 minutes remaining
  • Eagles trailed by four with 7:12 to play when Berry scored off the drive and then corner three from Clouet had the Eagles in front again, 71-70
  • Following the three, Hendawy stole the ball and finished on the other end with a dunk for a 76-74 lead with 3:35 left
  • After Knox tied the game with a bucket inside, the Eagles pushed the ball and Rozier stepped up again with another triple for a 79-76 lead with 3:13 remaining
  • Duncomb put the Eagles up five after a second chance basket
  • After the Hogs cut it back to a one possession game, Duncomb came back and powered his way in the post and finished at the rim to go back up five with two minutes remaining
  • Nick Pringle scored inside to make it a one possession game and then Acuff Jr. scored off the drive to cut the Eagles lead to one with 37 seconds left
  • The Eagles had a pass tipped that led to a turnover and a score on the other end by Pringle with 11.9 to play
  • Eagles had the final possession, but Berry's shot as time expired was off the mark

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Arkansas shot 50 percent from the floor while Winthrop finished at 48 percent
  • The Eagles knocked down 15 threes as they finished 15-for-31
  • Arkansas had a big advantage at the charity stripe going 20-for-22 while the Eagles were 4-of-6
  • Winthrop committed 10 turnovers that led to nine points while the Razorbacks committed nine turnovers that led to 10 points
  • The battle on the glass favored Arkansas 33-30 but the Eagles had the edge in second chance points (18-14)
  • Eagles had a season-high 18 assists
  • Kareem Rozier's career-high 23 points led four Eagles in double-figures as Clouet had 16, Duncomb scored 13 and Berry added 11

NOTABLES
  • Rozier has now scored 20 or more in back-to-back games
  • Rozier's seven threes were the most on the road by an Eagle since Bryce Baker had seven at Longwood on Feb. 27, 2025
  • It was the first time an Eagle had seven or more threes in a non-conference road game since Dec. 17, 2022 when Cory Hightower knocked down seven at LSU
  • Eagles streak of 10 or more free throw attempts in a game comes to an end at 36 straight
