Eagles Cruise Past Mercer In "Homecoming" Victory

Rock Hill, S.C. – Kareem Rozier led six players in double-figures with a game-high 20 points to lead Winthrop to a 105-69 victory over Mercer, Saturday afternoon inside the Winthrop Coliseum.

  • Kyle Cuffe Jr. (17 points, rebound, steal)
  • Baraka Okojie (16 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists)
  • Quinton Perkins II (11 points. 2 rebounds, 4 assists, steal)

FIRST HALF
  • The Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Armani Mighty boarded a miss and scored followed by a Baraka Okojie jumper
  • Winthrop responded with a 9-0 run behind back-to-back triples from Kareem Rozier and another by Isaiah Wilson for the 9-4 lead
  • Leading 13-8 with 14:34 remaining in the half, the Eagles used a 5-0 spurt by Josh Meo to build a double-digit lead
  • Winthrop led by 11 with 8:16 left in the half when Mercer chipped away to cut it to one in less than two minutes
  • The 10-0 run was highlighted by four straight points from Quinton Perkins II and capped off by a Kyle Cuffe Jr. three to pull the Bears within a point
  • Eagles finished the final 5:39 of the half 6-of-9 from the floor to build a 50-39 lead at the break

SECOND HALF
  • Perkins II opened the second half scoring as he knocked down a jumper
  • At the 17:09 mark the Eagles led by eight after two free throws from Zaire Williams as they used an 8-0 run to build the largest lead at 16 points (62-46)
  • Seifeldin Hendawy's stick back put the Eagles up 11, Tommy Kamarad drilled a three and Rozier capped the run with a layup off the drive
  • Winthrop led by 14 at the 14:08 mark, but that was the closest the Bears would get as the Eagles pushed the lead to 20-plus
  • A Kody Clouet three put the Eagles up 69-50 and then Daylen Berry's two free throws pushed it to a 21-point lead
  • Offensively the Eagles kept pouring it on and pushed the lead to 30 points at the 8:48 mark after two more free throws from Berry

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Eagles finished the game shooting 52 percent and were 11-for-25 behind the arc (44%)
  • The two teams combined for 63 free throws as Winthrop was 26-of-37 (70%) and Mercer was 16-of-26 (62%)
  • Winthrop won the battle on the glass 43-32 with 13 offensive boards that led to 15 second chance points
  • Points in the paint favored the Eagles 42-30
  • Winthrop had 11 turnovers while forcing 19 that led to 27 points
  • Meo's 16 points led an Eagle bench that contributed 55 points
  • Rozier's game-high 20 points also tied his career-high

NOTABLES
  • The 105 points marked the 4th most by an Eagle team in a home opener
  • This was the eighth straight win in a home opener for the Eagles
  • Eagles connected on a 11 threes in the game, the second time this season with 10 or more
  • There were 10 different Eagles that scored at least five points and eight players that attempted at least one free throw
  • Winthrop has now won six straight games against non-conference opponents at home
  • After finished with 37 free throw attempts the Eagles have now won 20 of the last 23 games in which they attempt 30 or more

The Eagles are back on the road for the next two contests beginning Tuesday, Nov. 18 as they head to Fayetteville, Ark. to take on 21st-ranked Arkansas at 8 p.m. (EST)
