Eagles Take Sixth-Straight with Sweep of Presbyterian

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University volleyball team left the fans with a treat in a straight-sets sweep of Presbyterian at the Winthrop Coliseum. Rachel McCollum stuffed the box score with 24 assists, 17 digs, and seven kills, while Avery Jolley led the attack with ten kills and Sophia Matthews steadied the back row with 18 digs.

Game Recap 
Set 1 

  • Winthrop jumped in front early as Glover and Sychterz finished, and Matthews dropped in an ace for a 7-2 cushion. 
  • Behind McCollum, the lead swelled to 16-8 after a flurry that included three McCollum kills in a four-point stretch. 
  • Presbyterian clawed all the way back and earned set point at 24–23, but Winthrop answered with a Glover kill to out to even it, 25-24. 
  • The Eagles slammed the door with a Little and Glover combo stuff to end it, 26-24. 

Set 2 

  • The Blue Hose opened 8-5, but Winthrop steadied as Jolley caught fire and Matthews aced to pull the Eagles level. 
  • A momentum-swinging block by Jolley and Sychterz and a string of PC errors turned the frame. 
  • Down the stretch, McCollum distributed on four straight points, to KeAra Bowen on the slide, a PC attack error, Glover, and finally to Jolley to reach set point. 
  • Sychterz hammered the closer off McCollum to take it, 25-18, and a 2-0 set lead. 

Set 3 

  • Torain opened on a heater at the line with back-to-back aces as Winthrop raced to 5–0 and never trailed. 
  • Glover and Jolley kept cashing in on kills, while McCollum fed Sychterz in transition to push it out of reach. 
  • The Eagles' block took over late with a Sychterz Reece Rhoads roof made it 23-13, followed by two more points on Yurkovich errors. 
  • Match point came on a Sychterz and Glover block to finish the sweep, 25-13.
