Jolley Eclipses Millennium Kill Mark, Eagles Top High Point for First Time Since 2019

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- On the back of Avery Jolley's milestone eclipsing performance, the Winthrop University volleyball team beat High Point for the first time since October of 2019 in a five-set thriller on Friday night at the Millis Center.

Set 1 (Winthrop 25, High Point 19): 
  • Winthrop opened with balanced offense as Laila Glover delivered an early kill from Rachel McCollum to even the score at 1-1. 
  • Addison Torain followed with a service ace to give the Eagles a 2-1 edge. 
  • Momentum stayed tight as Paige Bennett capitalized on High Point errors to keep the set level midway through. 
  • Avery Jolley capped the frame with the final kill, securing a 25-19 win for Winthrop. 
Set 2 (High Point 25, Winthrop 21): 
  • High Point answered early, jumping in front as Allie Gray and Addison Freeland led the Panthers' attack. 
  • Winthrop battled back with kills from Laila Glover and Avery Jolley to keep the set close at 15-14. 
  • Errors from the Eagles' side allowed High Point to pull away late. 
  • The Panthers closed the set 25-21 to even the match at one apiece. 
Set 3 (High Point 25, Winthrop 15): 
  • High Point seized momentum, racing out behind Addison Freeland's play. 
  • Winthrop struggled offensively, with attack errors widening the deficit to 15-10. 
  • The Panthers extended their advantage with kills from Remy Catojo and Élodie Lalonde. 
  • Winthrop fell 25-15, trailing two sets to one in the match. 
Set 4 (Winthrop 25, High Point 21): 
  • The Eagles regrouped with Isabella Murray dictating the tempo to Avery Jolley and Teagan Sychterz for early points. 
  • Winthrop held a narrow 16-14 edge midway through the frame on strong defensive stands. 
  • The offensive attack from Winthrop kept consistent hitting pressure on High Point, helping extend the lead. 
  • The Eagles finished the set 25-21, forcing a decisive fifth. 
Set 5 (Winthrop 18, High Point 16): 
  • The deciding frame featured seven ties and three lead changes. 
  • In the tiebreaker, Winthrop surged early with kills from Teagan Sychterz to grab momentum. 
  • Winthrop then put together a five-point swing in the middle of the set with two Avery Jolley service aces. 
  • Down the stretch, Murray connected with Giselle Little and Laila Glover for critical points to regain control. 
  • Winthrop sealed the match on a blocking error 18-16, taking the five-set victory.
