ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Sweeping the season series for the first time since 2018, the Winthrop University volleyball team defeated High Point, 3-1, on Saturday.
The first set score of 38-36 is the highest scoring first-set and is tied for the second-highest scoring set in the NCAA this season, only trumped by a 39-37 fourth set between Navy and Utah Valley in August of this season.

Set 1
- Winthrop answered an early exchange with a 4-0 surge on Sophia Matthews' serve to open a cushion.
- The frame swung constantly, 19 ties, with Bennett and Glover converting while McCollum added a solo stuff.
- Trailing 24-22, Winthrop saved two set points on a Jolley kill and Sychterz roof to force extras at 24-24.
- In a back-and-forth finish, Jolley and Bennett delivered clutch kills to level at 36-36 before HPU finally took it on a block for 38-36.
Set 2
- Giselle Little and Sychterz keyed a steady start; Winthrop built 7-3 before HPU clawed back to 9-9.
- McCollum kept the sides balanced; Bennett and Jolley traded kills, as the Eagles nudged ahead 15-13.
- After ties at 15 and 19, Winthrop separated late with a service error, Bennett tooling the block, and Sychterz scoring in transition for 24–22.
- Jolley closed it on McCollum's set for 25-23 and an even 1-1 match.
Set 3
- A middle-set jolt flipped the frame, Jolley authored a stretch with an ace and two block assists in a 5-1 run to create daylight at 9-4.
- Glover punished the middle seam with three kills in the stanza, while Little scored twice in rotation to repel the Panthers' push to within one.
- Bennett, Sychterz, and Jolley all scored in rhythm to help the Eagles reach 23.
- Jolley turned it up and cashed in on a kill to bring the Eagles to 24 and then dropped a set-point ace to end it 25-22, putting Winthrop up 2-1.
Set 4
- HPU's brief lead evaporated as Winthrop strung together a four-point burst on McCollum's serve, highlighted by a front-row stuff from Glover and Sychterz and a Sychterz ace.
- Jolley ripped consecutive kills to stretch the margin, and Bennett added a service ace as the cushion held.
- Down the stretch, McCollum fed Jolley twice and Glover, then Sychterz hammered the match-winner down the middle for 25-18, and the series sweep over the Panthers.
NEXT UP
The Eagles stay in the Coliseum for the final two home matches of the season, taking on Presbyterian on Halloween and finally Charleston Southern for Senior Day on Saturday.
