Eagles Return the Favor, Handles Radford in Four

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Taking their fourth-straight conference match, the Winthrop University volleyball team got their revenge against Radford, 3-1, on Friday night after the Highlanders took their earlier match up. 

Paige Bennett powered the Eagle attack, hammering home 17 kills on a .452 hitting clip, adding eleven digs for a double-double. Rachel McCollum once again quarterbacked the offense, dishing out 37 assists and dug out ten balls.

Game Recap 

Set 1 

  • Radford struck first for a 3-0 lead, but Winthrop immediately flipped the momentum with four unanswered, with back-to-back service aces from Addison Torain
  • The Eagles maintained control from there, extending their lead to as many as seven kills. 
  • Avery Jolley and Laila Glover powered the offense with four and three kills, respectively, providing steady firepower at the pins and in the middle. 
  • A late Radford setting error sealed the frame as Winthrop closed strong to take the opener convincingly. 

Set 2 

  • Winthrop carried its momentum directly into the second, jumping ahead 4-0 thanks to Highlander errors. 
  • Radford battled back to even the set at 6-6, but the Eagles refused to let the Highlanders settle in. 
  • Winthrop blew the set open midway with their outside hitters, capitalizing on Radford miscues to extend the lead past six. 
  • Another Radford attack error ended the frame, pushing the Eagles ahead 2-0 in the match. 

Set 3 

  • The Eagles again jumped ahead 4-0 to open the set, but Radford responded with steadier blocking. 
  • The frame stayed tight throughout as neither side allowed long runs or easy points. 
  • Winthrop continued to find contributions across the lineup, though Radford managed to edge ahead late. 
  • A Winthrop attack error on match point allowed Radford to take the set and extend the night. 

Set 4 

  • Winthrop opened the fourth with early kills from Giselle Little and Paige Bennett
  • Radford's service issues resurfaced, helping the Eagles stretch the advantage to as much as nine. 
  • McCollum continued to dictate the tempo and generate swings for Jolley, Bennett, and Glover as Winthrop dictated pace. 
  • A final Radford attack error closed the match, securing the Eagles' fourth straight conference win.
