Game Recap
- The Eagles found themselves with a two goal lead less than nine minutes into the match
- It started with Cordelia McIntosh in the 4th minute as Lindsay Sheets slipped a pass behind he defense into the box as McIntosh ran on and ripped a shot past Lexi Radvanyi
- Radford tried to answer right back with a shot from Lily Short to the lower left corner at the near post by Mia Vrataric turned it away
- In the 9th minute, Lauren Kelly dribbled in the middle of the field and then played a ball to Sheets who passed to Monssi Avila-Gutierrez in front of goal and she found the back of the net
- Winthrop took its two goal advantage into the half
- Both teams came out of the half with a lot of energy pushing forward offensively with each keeper being forced to make a save in the first five minutes
- Radford eventually broke through in the 57th minute as Paige Olson's corner kick found the head of Short who directed it into the right corner of the goal
- Winthrop tried to answer right back with a series of wel struck shots around the edge of the 18 but each time Radford was able to get a defender in the way to block it from reaching the frame
- Winthrop regained its two goal lead minutes later as the Eagles served a corner in the box and a short clearnce in a crowd came out to Avila-Gutierrez who took a touch to her right foot and ripped a low shot into the net
- The Highlanders did make it a one goal game in the 85th minute off another corner Ryane Devlin's service found Ashley Loundermon at the back post as she headed it into the goal
Notables
- Radford had a 14-12 edge in total shots and 6-5 in shots on goal
- Avila-Gutierrez is the first Eagle with a brace in a conference match since teammate Evyn Schokora did so on Oct. 11, 2024 at Presbyterian College
- Avila-Gutierrez now has three goals on the season and nine in her career as an Eagle
- The goal for McIntosh was her second on the season
- This was the first win over Radford since the 2014 season
- Eagles have now won back-to-back league games for the first time since the 2021 season
Looking Ahead
Winthrop is off until the following weekend as it heads to Clinton, S.C. on Friday, Oct. 24 to take on Presbyterian College at 7 p.m.
