Eagles Drop Hard Fought Big South Match At PC

Clinton, S.C. – Winthrop men's soccer dropped a hard fought match 1-0 to Presbyterian College, Saturday evening in Big South Conference action.

Game Recap
  • Eagles had a good chance to grab an early lead as they earned a corner in the 6th minute
  • Off the corner, Diomario Adamson's service made it to Jayco Castro open at the back post but his header was just wide of the frame to the right
  • Eagles came close minutes later as Sodai Koketsu intercepted a pass in the PC defensive third as he dribbled into the box and tried to beat the goalkeeper to the top left corner but his shot was just off target as it pinged off the bar
  • Blue Hose had a clean look in the box in the 26th minute as a Max Falconer struck a back pass first time just missing the right corner of the frame
  • Despite getting forward and creating a number of scoring chances the Eagles trailed 1-0 at the half
  • The Blue Hose were awarded a penalty as two Eagles and one Blue Hose player collided in the box in the 33rd minute
  • Steven Cordova stepped in to take the penalty and buried it into the lower left corner to put PC on top
  • Defensive pressure nearly paid off for the Eagles in the 60th minute as they won the ball on a tackle in the box that came to Thomas Wilson
  • Wilson struck a shot from about 10 yards out first time but it was blocked by a defender
  • The rebound came and as Koketsu ran on but his shot on frame was also cut off by a defender and cleared away
  • Minutes later Winthrop had another good chance as Jonah Straube got on the end of a corner service by Haruto Horii but his header was collected at the goal line by PC goalkeeper Tim Baerwalde

Notables
  • The Blue Hose had a 10-9 edge in total shots while shots on goal were event at five each
  • Jack Kilstrom finished with four saves while Baerwalde also had four for PC

Winthrop returns home for a midweek non-conference matchup with the College of Charleston on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.
