Eagles Earn Draw At Gardner-Webb

Boiling Springs, N.C. – Winthrop and Gardner-Webb battled to a scoreless draw Wednesday evening in Big South Conference women's soccer action.

  • Eagles came close to striking first in the 18th minute as a long throw by Elle Brewer into the box was headed down by a defender
  • Monssi Avila-Gutierrez collected the loose ball just inside the box and fired a shot to the top left corner that missed by inches
  • Gardner-Webb had a solid scoring chance in the 23rd minute as a goal kicked was settled by Annie Slovak as she pushed the ball into open space and as a defender close in she fired a shot near the edge of the box but Sofia Iori made the save
  • In the 34th minute the Eagles served a ball into the box that deflected to the back post as Cordelia McIntosh chased it down and tried to place a shot by the keeper but couldn't get enough on the shot as Savannah Dixon made the save
  • Iori came up big in the 38th minute as Slovak dribbled by two defenders into the box and fired a shot at the near post that was turned away for a corner by Iori
  • Runnin' Bulldogs had a clean look from outside the 18 in the 53rd minute as Olivia Tribolet fired a shot to the lower right corner but Mia Vrataric made the diving save
  • Eagles had a great chance late in the match with just over a minute left as Sophia Balliet played a ball across the goal mouth as Lauren Kelly ran on at the back post but she was unable to get around on the shot as it just sailed wide of the post

  • Gardner-Webb finished with a 16-9 advantage in total shots and had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal
  • Gardner-Webb earned four corners while the Eagles had three
  • This is the fourth draw of the season for the Eagles, tying the 2024 team for the second most in a single-season
  • It is also the fifth shutout of the season by the Eagles, tied for the 4th most in a season

Looking Ahead
Eagles return home as they will host UNC Asheville on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. There will be a pregame ceremony for Senior Day recognitions.
