How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop got the scoring started on a tip-in second chance layup by Ronaltha Marc at the 9:02 mark but the Bulldogs answered with seven straight points in a span of a minute and a half. Marc then hit three field goals to put the Eagles ahead 9-7 at the 3:58 mark and a few seconds later Winthrop extended their lead to four on Marissa Gasaway's bucket. Winthrop also held UNC Asheville scoreless for more than four minutes. The visitors rallied again to knot the score at 12 with less than two minutes left but a triple by Ciara Harris and another layup by Gasaway gave Winthrop a five-point lead at the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter | After Winthrop hit a free throw to go up six to start the second quarter, UNC Asheville scored four quick points to slice the deficit to two but the Eagles answered with baskets by Gasaway and Konnor Gambrell to restore the six-point lead for Winthrop. After a three-point basket by UNC Asheville at the 5:36 mark, the Eagles went on a 13-3 run to end the half, taking a 35-22 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Third Quarter | UNC Asheville scored 10 of the first 15 points of the second half, cutting the lead to 40-32 at the 3:09 mark. The Bulldogs also held Winthrop scoreless for nearly four minutes. But the Eagles struck back, finishing the frame on an 11-3 run, giving Winthrop a 51-35 lead.

Fourth Quarter | Gambrell scored all six of Winthrop's early points in the first four minutes of the quarter. But UNC Asheville could only muster four points themselves, leaving Winthrop ahead 54-39 at the 6:21 mark. Gambrell's sixth point of the fourth quarter kickstarted a 9-0 run and holding the Bulldogs scoreless for five minutes. UNC Asheville scored the final four points of the game to end the day.
