Eagles Defeat USC Upstate On The Road To Open Big South Play

Spartanburg, S.C. – Winthrop men's soccer opened up Big South Conference play with a 2-0 road victory over USC Upstate, Saturday evening.

Game Recap
  • Eagles caught a break in the early going as Adrian Panaite's shot in the 2nd minute hit off the right post and escaped without yielding a goal
  • In the 5th minute Ricardo Ferreira put the team's first shot on frame as he tried to beat the keeper to the lower left but Cooper Jennings was there for the save
  • Upstate earned three corners within a minute and seven-second span but the Eagles were able to stand their ground defensively
  • Bernardo Pacheco nearly gave the Eagles the lead in the 17th minute as his shot off a corner hit the post but stayed out of the net
  • In the 24th minute Sodai Koketsu tried to beat Jennings to the lower left but again he was there for the save
  • Eagles finally broke through in the 49th minute as they earned a penalty and Rodrigo Ferreira calmly placed a shot into the net for his first of the season
  • Eagles nearly doubled their lead in the 54th minute as a shot by Josh Sczech hit the left post and Upstate cleared
  • In the 75th minute the Eagles doubled their lead at 2-0 when Pacheco set up Suhong Jung as he placed a shot into the left side of the goal

Foot Notes
  • This was the first time since 2021 the Eagles recorded a shutout in a conference opener
  • In 2021 the Eagles defeated UNC Asheville 4-0 in the opener
  • Suhong Jung scored his first goal since that 4-0 victory over Asheville in 2021
  • This was the 11th time the Eagles shutout their opponent in a Big South opener
  • Eagles finished with an 18-12 advantage in total shots and 8-3 in shots on goal
  • Upstate earned nine corners while the Eagles had four
  • Sophomore Jack Kilstrom made three saves to earn his first shutout of the season and 2nd of his career

Winthrop returns home for the first of three games at Eagle Field when it hosts Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.
