Suhong's Late Goal Lifts Eagles Over Longwood Friday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – Suhong Jung's goal in the 89th minute lifted Winthrop to a 2-1 victory over Longwood, pushing the Eagles to 2-0 to begin Big South Conference action.

Game Recap
  • It was a relatively quiet first half as each team had a couple of shots just missing wide and the game was scoreless at the break
  • Jack Kilstrom made his first save in the 9th minute as Ethan Stevenson fired a shot from outside the box a little to Kilstrom's right as he collected the shot
  • In the 15th minute Ryan Armijo just missed the lower left corner
  • Suhong Jung came close to opening the scoring in the 24th minute as he rifled a shot from 25 yards out that was just barely tipped over the bar by Max Hinke
  • Eagles finally did break through in the 69th minute as Bruno Riveron Sagrero passed the ball to Rodrigo Ferreira in the middle of the field
  • Rodrigo Ferreira took a couple dribbles to his left and fired a shot into the lower right corner from about 25 yards straight on from goal
  • The Lancers tied the match in the 89th minute as Mateo Nance's cross to the near post was collected by Desmond Adeyemi as he then quickly placed a shot past Kilstrom to his lower left from the edge of the six
  • Winthrop answered 28 seconds later as Jung took a pass from Riveron Sagrero, dribbled to his right and near the edge of the box he slotted a shot into the lower right corner

Foot Notes
  • Sung and Rodrigo Ferreira each netted their second goals of the season
  • Longwood had a 10-8 edge in total shots while the Eagles had 4-3 advantage in shots on goal
  • Winthrop finished with six corners while Longwood had three
  • This is the first 2-0 start to conference play since the 2015 season

Looking Ahead
Eagle stay at home as they'll have a midweek Big South contest on Tuesday, Oct. 8 when they host Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.
