- Gardner-Webb took the lead in the 27th minute as Elias Khodri received a pass, spun past a Winthrop defender and then fired a low shot that took a slight deflection and zipped past a diving Andres Manzano Garcia
- Eagles had a chance in the 60th minute as they worked the ball up field and Boris Nguelle found himself with a good look off a pass just inside the 18 as he placed a shot on frame but right at the keeper
- In the 62nd minute Caleb Bennett's header straight on from goal off a service sailed over the bar
