Game Recap
  • The teams were scoreless after the first 45 minutes in which VMI held a 9-1 advantage in shots
  • But the Eagles knotted two goals in the second half to earn the win at home
  • It began in the 68th minute as Emma Smith slipped a ball behind the defense to Sophia Balliet running into open space
  • Balliet received the pass and dribbled into the area with pace as she found Monssi Avila-Gutierrez in front of goal and she placed a one-touch shot into the open net
  • Jessica Gengler nearly made it 2-0 in the 79th minute as she laced a shot from 25 yards out toward the top left corner that tipped wide by a fully-extended dive by Whitney Tracy for a corner
  • On that corner, the Eagles took advantage and added to the lead
  • Cameron Celce added an insurance goal in the 80th minute
  • The goal came off a corner kick as the service was right in front of goal as the VMI keeper went to punch the ball away
  • The keeper punched it into a crowd of players, the ball bounced back toward goal as a defender slid to clear the ball away but it took a deflection toward Celce and she headed it into the open net for her first collegiate goal

  • It was the 8th career assist for Smith and the second for Balliet
