Game Recap
- The teams were scoreless after the first 45 minutes in which VMI held a 9-1 advantage in shots
- But the Eagles knotted two goals in the second half to earn the win at home
- It began in the 68th minute as Emma Smith slipped a ball behind the defense to Sophia Balliet running into open space
- Balliet received the pass and dribbled into the area with pace as she found Monssi Avila-Gutierrez in front of goal and she placed a one-touch shot into the open net
- Jessica Gengler nearly made it 2-0 in the 79th minute as she laced a shot from 25 yards out toward the top left corner that tipped wide by a fully-extended dive by Whitney Tracy for a corner
- On that corner, the Eagles took advantage and added to the lead
- Cameron Celce added an insurance goal in the 80th minute
- The goal came off a corner kick as the service was right in front of goal as the VMI keeper went to punch the ball away
- The keeper punched it into a crowd of players, the ball bounced back toward goal as a defender slid to clear the ball away but it took a deflection toward Celce and she headed it into the open net for her first collegiate goal

- The goal for Avila-Gutierrez was the 5th of her career
- It was the 8th career assist for Smith and the second for Balliet
- VMI had a 12-9 advantage in total shots while the Eagles had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal
- Mia Vrtaric made four saves to earn her third shutout of her career and the season
- The victory was the 100th for head coach Spencer Smith at the helm of the Eagle program

Winthrop is back on the road for the 3
rd time in four games when it heads to Cullowhee, N.C. on Sunday, Sept. 15 to take on Western Carolina at 2 p.m.
