Eagles Fall To Queens Sunday Afternoon In Hard Fought Match

Charlotte, N.C. – Winthrop fell 2-0 at Queens in a hard fought match Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action.

Game Recap
  • Queens was awarded a penalty kick in the 6th minute as the Eagles were whistled for a foul on a 50/50 ball at the edge of the box
  • Madeline Cheatham converted the penalty as she placed a shot into the lower left corner
  • Just a couple minutes later Queens applied more pressure and a ball was sent into the box as Savannah Stuart headed the ball toward goal that was saved by Mia Vrataric among a crowd and the Eagles cleared
  • In the 21st minute the Eagles started to get something going in the final third
  • Jessica Gengler struck a left footed shot toward the right corner from just outside the area but keeper Kelsey Jargstorf had it covered for the save
  • A little over a minute later Cameron Celce earned a free kick about 10 yards from the endline and outside the box to the right of goal
  • The service came to the back post as Ally Bender ran on and redirected the ball toward goal but was blocked by a defender
  • Sophia Balliet got the ball, played a back pass to Kylie Full and her shot was on frame was blocked away by a defender
  • Eagles earned a corner in the 24th minute as the ball bounced around in front of goal after the service and the Eagles possessed
  • Lauren Kelly received a back pass around the penalty arc but was unable to keep her shot down as it went over the bar
  • In the 31st minute another Winthrop corner posed a threat as the service came toward the frame at the near post as Jargstorf was forced to punch the ball out away from goal and Queens cleared
  • In the 41st minute the Eagles pushed the ball and in the run of play Evyn Schokora received a pass wide as she fired a shot as she entered the area but it was just wide of the lower left corner
  • Queens grabbed a two goal lead in the 61st minute as Sejla Podzic received a pass, dribbled to her right and from 20 yards out ripped a low shot through traffic that beat Vrataric diving to her right
  • Eagles best chance of the second half came in the 70th minute as Schokora collected a free ball near the top of the area, took a touch while shielding off a defender and fired a shot toward goal but it was high
  • In the 77th minute Schokora had another look at the top of the box and let a shot go but a defender was able to get her foot in the way as it cushioned the strength of the ball and the keeper was able to easily collect the shot
  • Eagles did get the ball forward in the second half, but were unable to connect in the final third

Notables
  • Royals finished with an 11-9 edge in total shots and led in shots on goal (6-1)
  • Queens finished with seven corners while the Eagles had three
  • Mia Vrataric finished with a season-high four saves

Eagles finish their three-game road trip on Thursday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford College at 6 p.m.
