How it Happened

Set 1 | Tied at six in the early going on two kills each by Avery Jolley and Paige Bennett, Winthrop went up 9-7 on a kill by Bennett and two Hokie errors. The visitors responded with a 7-0 spurt to go ahead 14-9. The Eagles then answered with a mini-rally of their own to cut the lead to 16-13 but Virginia Tech scored five of the next seven points to take a 21-15 lead. Winthrop once again cut the deficit to three at 24-21 but a kill by the Hokies ended the frame.

Set 2 | Virginia Tech took a 6-3 lead but a big 9-1 run by the home standing Eagles put them ahead 12-7. Bennett lead the offensive attack for Winthrop with three kills during the run. The Hokies went on a 7-1 run of their own to go back in the lead at 14-13. Winthrop then answered right back by scoring seven of the next 11 points to forge ahead 20-18. Jolley accounted for three kills during the spurt. But the Hokies ended the set by scoring seven of the final nine points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set 3 | Winthrop trailed 8-5 to start the third frame but it was all Eagles for the rest of the set, at one point going on two separate 7-0 runs to take a 19-11 lead. The second 7-0 outburst came after Virginia Tech had scored three straight points. After the second 7-0 run, the Hokies again scored three straight points but the Eagles got on the board in the match by closing out the set 6-2.

Set 4 | The fourth set was similar to the third, as the Hokies took a 9-4 lead. But Winthrop once again went on the offensive attack, taking a 22-15 lead thanks to a 18-6 run. During the run, Karli Shepherd accounted for four kills. After Virginia Tech scored the next two points, Winthrop tied the match by scoring the final three points of the frame.
