Blacksburg, Va. – Playing on the road for the first time this season, Winthrop volleyball rebounded from Friday night's five-set loss to Virginia Tech but registering a 3-0 sweep of the Hokies in a re-match (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
Set 1 | The contest started with Winthrop taking an 11-6 lead as a result of a 8-0 run. During the run,
Isabella Murray led the way with three aces. Virginia Tech responded by tying the score at 18 with a 12-7 spurt. Then a service error by Virginia Tech, another Murray ace and a
Paige Bennett kill broke the tie and put the Eagles up three at 21-18. On the next play, Virginia Tech cut it to two on a kill but the Eagles closed out the set by scoring four of the next five points.
Maeve Rehmann's kill ended the frame and put Winthrop up 1-0 in the match.
Set 2 | The second set started with Winthrop up 5-4 before the Hokies scored four consecutive points. But the Eagles went on a tear, taking a 15-12 lead via a 10-4 run. Virginia Tech then came back to take a one-point edge at 18-17 by scoring six of the next eight points.
Rachel McCollum's kill knotted the set at 18 and a kill by
Lexie Vick and a Hokie error on the next two plays put the Eagles back out in front by two at 20-18. Following an error, McCollum's kill restored the lead to two and on the next play, a Virginia Tech kill once again cut the lead to one but a kill by
Avery Jolley and a Hokie error immediately thereafter put Winthrop up 23-20. Another Virginia Tech error put Winthrop within one point of taking the set but two consecutive points by the Hokies sliced the margin in half but Jolley's kill ended the stanza on the next play.
Set 3 | Winthrop began the third set by jumping out to a 14-7 edge. Jolley and
Sophia Matthews highlighted the hot start to the frame by each recording an ace. The Hokies scored the next three points but the Eagles answered right back with a kill by Murray, another Jolley ace and an error by Virginia Tech, taking up the margin back to seven at 17-10. Virginia Tech again cut it to four at 18-14 but a
Karli Shepherd kill and an error against the Hokies put Winthrop up 20-14. The Hokies rallied to score seven of the next ten points to make it a two-point margin at 23-21. A Jolley kill put the Eagles within one point of winning the match with a kill and on the next play Rehmann's kill ended it.

Winthrop will stay in Virginia, traveling to the state capital for the VCU Invitational in Richmond. The Eagles will first square off with Lafayette on Friday, Sep. 6 at 2:00 p.m. and then face host VCU the next day at 4:00 p.m.
