Eagles Fall To Furman In Hard Fought Contest

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop men's soccer fell 2-1 to Furman Sunday evening in the 2024 home opener.

Game Recap
  • The first 45 minutes was hard fought but neither team was able to find the back of the net
  • Eagles came close in the 14th minute when Bruno Riveron Sagrero's shot from about 25 yards out pinged off the crossbar
  • Early in the second half the Eagles earned a corner as Riveron Sagrero delivered a ball to the back post
  • Sam Pidgeon ran onto the service and finished with a volley into the left corner of the goal
  • About five minutes later Ricardo Ferreira had a chance in the run of play as he cut back on a defender and tried to curl a shot into the right corner that just missed wide
  • In the 61st minute, a defensive mistake led to Wesley Siegel heading to goal one-on-one as he drew the keeper out and then laid off a pass to his right as Christian Kraus ran on and placed a shot into the open frame
  • Paladins took the lead in the 73rd minute as Snell Wamu Lloyd dribbled into space down the right side of the field, delivered a ball toward goal that was redirected in front as Ivan Agyaakwah ripped the rebound into the back of the net
  • Rodrigo Ferreira nearly tied the game in the 87th minute as he tried to chip the keeper from about 40 yards from the outside as Aaron Salinas was forced to tip the ball over the bar as he back peddled to make the save
  • In the final moments of the game, the Eagles earned a corner and the service was right in front as Pidgeon was on the end of it but his shot toward goal was blocked among a crowd of Furman defenders

Foot Notes
  • Furman finished with a 17-9 advantage in total shots, 8-2 in shots on goal
  • Eagles had an edge in corners 4-3
  • The goal for Pidgeon was his first as an Eagle while Riveron Sagrero had his first assist as an Eagle

Winthrop is back on the road as it travels to Jacksonville, Fla. on Thursday, Aug. 29 to take on North Florida at 7:30 p.m.
