Game Recap
- Eagles nearly broke through in the third minute as Mia Silber chased down a through ball and delivered a cross in front as Sophia Balliet made a run at the near post
- Balliet struck a shot first time toward the open net, but Katelyn O'Neill made a diving save and the defense cleared
- In the 8th minute Sadie Guest received a pass near the edge of the box, turned the defender into space and fired a shot that just missed the lower left corner
- Winthrop got on the board in the 14th minute as Evyn Schokora slipped a pass to Balliet as she dribbled past the back line and finished one-on-one for the early lead
- Persistence nearly paid off for Lauren Kelly in the 23rd minute as she battled for the ball among Southern Wesleyan defenders inside the box
- The ball popped into open space and Kelly immediately fired a shot from about 12 yards out on goal but it was right at the keeper
- In the 37th minute the Eagles grabbed a two goal advantage as Laura Bennett received a pass near the edge of the box and after a deflection off a defender she immediately fired a shot into the lower left corner
- Eagles nearly made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute as Jessica Gengler was set up with a one-on-one with the keeper
- Gengler dribbled past the keeper and tried to slip a pass into the open net from a tight angle as a defender was able to get in the way to block the shot and the defense cleared
- Eagles had a couple more opportunities to add to their lead, but O'Neill made some good saves to keep it at 2-0
Notables
- For the second straight season, Balliet scored a goal in the first home game
- It was Balliet's sixth career goal (16 career games)
- Eagles are now 3-0-1 in the last four home openers
- Mia Vrataric made three saves to record her first collegiate shutout
- Eagles finished with a 17-4 advantage in shots and 10-3 in shots on goal
Looking Ahead
Eagles will be back in action on Thursday, Aug. 29 when they head to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on South Carolina State at 6 p.m.
