Jackson, Smith Garner Big South Weekly Honors

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop's Mackenzie Smith was tabbed the Big South Conference Pitcher of the Week while Emma Jackson took home Player of the Week honors, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

Jackson batted .400 (4-10) with two home runs, five RBI, six runs scored and four walks to help Winthrop win three times and clinch the final berth in this week's Big South Championship tournament.  She opened her week with a home run, walk and two runs scored in the Eagles' 7-0 win over Charleston Southern last Thursday.  Jackson hit a 3-run home run in the fifth inning to lead Winthrop past USC Upstate on Friday, 5-0.  She walked and scored twice in game two vs. the Spartans, and concluded the week with a run-scoring double to help Winthrop to a 6-4 series-clinching victory on Sunday.

Smith started and won the series finale against USC Upstate to lock-up the final seed in the Big South Tournament.  She allowed just three hits, two earned runs and one walk in five innings of work, while striking out three batters.  Smith also helped her cause with a 2-3 day at the plate with an RBI in the 6-4 triumph.

This is the first Big South weekly award for Jackson and Smith. Jackson is the first Eagle this season to claim Player of the Week honors while Smith is the second Eagle to be named Pitcher of the Week.

The Eagles will compete in the Big South Conference Championship May 9-11 on Terry Field as they open up Thursday, May 9 at 1 p.m. vs. second-seeded Longwood.
