Eagles Drop Tight Contest At High Point

High Point, N.C. – Winthrop dropped the second game of a three-game series with the Panthers by a final score of 11-7. Winthrop moves to 17-27-1 overall and 6-13 in Big South play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • High Point jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, highlighted by RBI doubles by Cael Chatham and Charlie Klinger.
  • Evans tied the score on a three-run shot to left center field with one out in the top of the second.
  • High Point went back into the lead at 4-3 in their half of the inning on Konni Durschlag's sac fly to right field with no one out, bringing in Brayden Simpson.
  • Winthrop then seized their first lead of the game in the third by scoring three runs in the frame.
  • Evans's RBI single to right field scored Cole Griffith on the play to cap off the rally and give Winthrop a 6-4 lead.
  • High Point answered with a 3-0 tally of their own in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 7-6 lead.
  • Patrick Matthews's two-run RBI single to left field with two outs gave the Panthers the one-run edge.
  • With Abe Affholter 90 feet away from tying the score once again, Harrison Wilson struck out to end the top of the sixth for the Eagles.
  • High Point scored four more runs in their half of the inning to take a four-run lead at 10-6.
  • Simpson homered in the bottom of the seventh to left field to up their lead to five.
  • In the top of the eighth, with Anthony Ruocco on third with one out after a wild pitch, Luke Hannum grounded out to bring in Ruocco to cut the deficit to 11-7 and wrapped up the scoring for the day.
