Farmville, Va. – Winthrop (1-10, 1-3 Big South) saw a furious second half comeback at Longwood fall four points short, 19-15, on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lancers took a 3-0 lead halfway through the first period before Tori Iannotti scored with five minutes remaining in the frame.
- Longwood answered with four consecutive goals to go up 7-1 inside of a minute.
- Ellie Dutton put one in the back of the net with 10 seconds remaining on a free position shot.
- Longwood made it a six-goal margin at the 9:24 mark of the second quarter and scored again nearly a minute later to up the lead to 9-2.
- Lexi Johnson scored at the 7:36 mark to make it a six-goal deficit again.
- After another score by the Lancers, Taylor Bumstead and Katie Witmer each tacked on a goal and cut the lead to 10-5 with two minutes left in the second quarter.
- Longwood added on one more goal with less than a minute until the intermission.
- Winthrop outscored the Lancers 6-4 in the third quarter.
- Longwood extended their lead to eight four minutes into the second half.
- But the Eagles then scored three straight times, including two by Gabby Pierpont.
- One her goals came on the man-down with 10:10 remaining in the period.
- After the Lancers scored four minutes later, Winthrop continued to battle back, suddenly cutting the lead to 14-11 after Bumstead's second goal of the contest with nearly a minute left in the third period.
- Longwood concluded the quarter with a goal with 10 seconds left.
- Johnson began the fourth quarter with a goal one minute in but Longwood answered with three straight scores, taking an 18-12 lead halfway through the frame.
- Dutton made it a five-goal affair with 7:41 left but the Lancers went up six a minute later.
- Claire Witmer and Dutton scored the final two goals of the game, with Dutton's coming with a minute left.

- Scarlet Cifarelli had four assists and three groundballs to lead Winthrop.

- Eagle reserve goalkeeper Mikaylah Lindsay tied for an individual season-high five saves.

- Both team each had eight assists and saves.
- The eight assists were a team season-high.
- The two teams were also even in draw controls, 19-19.
