Lexi Johnson and
Scarlet Cifarelli combined to score eight goals in a 20-16 loss to Wofford at home on Tuesday afternoon. Winthrop moves to 1-11 and 1-4 in the Big South with three regular-season games remaining.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first quarter was a wild and back-and-forth affair, with Wofford leading 6-5 after 15 minutes of action.
- Grace Taylor got the Eagles on the board first on the man-up at the 13:35 mark.
- Cifarelli's goal 6:13 left in the quarter gave Winthrop their third and final lead of the game at 4-3.
- Dutton tied it at five on the man-up with 1:22 remaining in the first quarter, the final time the game was knotted up.
- Wofford scored with 44 seconds left in the quarter to break the tie.
- The Terriers outscored Winthrop 6-2 in the second quarter at took a 12-7 lead going into the break.
- This also saw the visitors open the second quarter by scoring the first four goals.
- The third quarter was more even, with the Wofford outscoring Winthrop by a slim 5-3 margin as they would go on to lead 17-10 at the start of the fourth quarter.
- Winthrop battled back early in the fourth, scoring the first three goals and cutting the margin in half to 17-13 after Cifarelli's goal on the man-up with 12:45 left.
- However, the Terriers responded with three straight goals of their own to go back up seven with 5:33 to go.
- The Eagles scored the final three goals of the contest, with two goals by Johnson and Dutton's on the man-up with nearly a minute left.
- Winthrop would outscore the Terriers 6-3 in the fourth.
