Eagles Nearly Comeback From 10-Run Deficit In Ninth, Falls To USC Upstate

Rock Hill, S.C. – In the Eagles' debut on ESPNU's National Baseball Game of the Week, Winthrop nearly came all the way back from a 10-run deficit in the ninth inning but would fall to USC Upstate in the second game of a three-game home series with the Spartans on Saturday night by a final score of 13-10. Winthrop moves to 12-16-1 overall and 4-4 in the Big South.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grant Sherrod homered to right field on the third play of the game to put the visiting Spartans ahead 1-0.
  • Winthrop loaded the bases with two outs but Harrison Wilson flew out to center field to end the first inning.
  • Upstate extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the second on Vance Sheahan's RBI single to left field, bringing home Tyler Lang.
  • Troy Hamilton hit Upstate's second homer of the game in the next inning to lead 3-0.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Spartans scored four more runs to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Jace Rinehart's RBI single and Koby Kropf's two-run single made the score 10-0 in the top of the sixth.
  • Winthrop got on the board in the bottom half of the inning with one out on Cole Griffith's groundout, scoring Nicholas Badillo.
  • On the next play, Wilson doubled down the left field line, driving in Jaylen Hernandez.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, leadoff hitter Abe Affholter homered to right field on the first pitch, making the score 10-3.
  • In the top of the ninth Upstate scored three runs to go up 13-3.
  • Winthrop would not go out quietly, as Alan Benhardt singled to left field to drive in Charlie Evans and Affholter.
  • Then with the bases loaded with two outs, Griffith made the score 13-6 when he was hit by a pitch, walking in Benhardt.
  • Wilson cut the deficit to three at 13-10 with a grand slam, sending the Winthrop Ballpark crowd into a frenzy and leaving the Eagles very much alive.
  • But Ricky Teel flew out to end the game.
