Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop dropped the first game of a three-game home series to USC Upstate on Friday night by a final score of 5-2. Winthrop moves to 12-15-1 overall and 4-3 in the Big South.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Charlie Evans hit a two-run shot to left field, putting the Eagles up 2-0 at the end of the third inning.
• The Spartans threatened to tie the game in the top of the fourth.
• With two outs and guys on second and third following a wild pitch, Vance Sheahan flew out to center field to end the inning.
• Nicholas Badillo led off the sixth with a double down the left field line.
• Badillo advanced to third on the next play on Jaylen Hernandez's ground out, putting the Eagles in position to extend their lead.
• However, Winthrop could not capitalize. After Harrison Wilson drew a walk, the next two batters struck out to end the threat.
• USC Upstate loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh and proceeded to score five runs in the inning to go ahead to stay, 5-2.
