Columbia, S.C. – Winthrop fell 2-1 in 11 innings at #22 South Carolina, Wednesday evening in non-conference softball action.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Gamecocks threatened in the bottom of the second as Zoe Laneaux doubled to center with two outs
- Karley Shelton followed with a walk and then a Brooke Blankenship single up the middle loaded the bases
- But Megan Powell struck out Jen Cummings to end the inning
- In the top of the fourth, Ashton VanHouse led off with a single to short
- Reese Basinger followed with a double to right center as VanHouse raced around to score for an early 1-0 lead
- Emma Jackson walked to put two runners on and force a pitching change
- After back-to-back outs Ansley Lee reached on a fielding error to load the bases but the Eagles were unable to tack on any more runs
- In the bottom of the sixth, the Gamecocks got a one out double from Kianna Jones
- Jones then moved to third on a foul out in first base foul territory
- Powell once again stayed strong in the circle as she struck out Marissa Gonzalez to end the threat
- In the bottom of the seventh with one out, Laneaux fouled off four straight pitches before taking a 3-2 count over the fence in left center to tie the game at 1-1
- Lee led off the 10th inning with a single to center
- Three batters later, Paige Rivas singled through the hole at short to put runners at first and second but were unable to push any runs across
- Gamecocks got a two-out single from Gonzalez in the bottom of the 11th and then she stole second
- Denver Bryant stepped in and doubled to left to score the winning run
EXTRA BASES
- This was the longest game the Eagles have played since going 12 innings on Apr. 16, 2021 in a 2-1 win over USC Upstate
- Eagles finished with one run on five hits with six left on base while South Carolina had the two runs on six hits with seven left on base
- Basinger's RBI double extended her hitting streak to seven games
- Jackson's walk extended her streak of reaching base to nine straight
ON DECK
Winthrop will be off until Wednesday, Apr. 10 when it hosts Wofford College in a midweek contest at 6 p.m.
