Eagles Down Bucs In Game 1, 2nd Game Of Doubleheader Postponed

Box Score Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop opened the day with a 9-1 victory in six innings over Charleston Southern before game two of the doubleheader was halted due to unplayable field conditions following a storm.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Eagles struck first with three runs in the bottom of the first inning
  • Paige Rivas drew a leadoff walk and Ashton VanHouse followed with a walk
  • Two batters later, KaDedra Temple doubled to right center to score Rivas and putting runners at second and third
  • Reese Basinger followed with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 2-0 as VanHouse tagged and scored
  • Megan Powell followed with a single to right to score Temple and build a three run advantage
  • Eagles pushed three more across in the fourth inning that started with a leadoff home run by Powell
  • Ansley Lee doubled off the wall down the left field line and then scored on a throwing error for a 5-0 lead
  • VanHouse made it 6-0 with an RBI groundout
  • In the sixth inning, Emma Jackson hit a three-run walkoff home run to end the game in six inning with a 9-1 victory
Game 2
  • The game was halted in the top of the fourth inning due to unplayable field conditions following a hail and rain storm

EXTRA BASES
  • Paige Rivas stole her 64th career base, moving within one of teammate Ashton VanHouse for 4th all-time
  • Rivas also picked up her 140th career hit as an Eagle, becoming the 28th player in program history with 140 or more hits

ON DECK
Winthrop will be off until Tuesday, Apr. 30 when it hosts the College of Charleston in a single-game scheduled for 4 p.m. The Eagles will turn around and play at North Carolina the next day (May 1) with a 6 p.m. start.
