Macon, Ga. – Playing for the first time in a week, Winthrop lost on Saturday afternoon to the Mercer University Bears on the road by a final score of 22-5. Winthrop moves to 1-13 and 1-6 in the Big South.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winthrop led 2-1 five minutes into the game on goals by Ellie Dutton and Claire Witmer.
- The Bears scored the next nine goals over the final 10 minutes of the first quarter, taking a 10-2 lead into the second quarter.
- Mercer got a goal at the 9:59 mark of the second period to extend their lead to nine and then went up 10 more than two minutes later.
- The hosts would eventually take a 14-2 lead into the break.
- Mercer scored the first goal of the second half, this one coming at the 10:53 mark.
- The Bears would score five more times in the third quarter, taking a 20-2 lead entering the fourth quarter.
- Dutton ended Mercer's 19-0 run with her second goal of the game at the 14:21 mark of the fourth quarter and making the score 20-3 in favor of the Bears.
- Mercer answered with a goal more than two minutes later to go back up 18.
- Lexi Johnson scored her first goal of the game with 4:49 left in the game.
- Dutton notched her third tally of the contest on the man-up with 1:53 remaining.
- Mercer wrapped up the scoring with two seconds left.
