Scarlet Cifarelli's goal with nearly nine minutes left capped a second half comeback at Presbyterian to end the 2024 campaign for the Eagles as Winthrop defeated the Blue Hose 11-9 on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, Winthrop ends the season with a final record of 2-13 and 2-6 in the Big South.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winthrop jumped out to a 2-0 lead two minutes into the contest on goals by Claire Witmer and Ellie Dutton.
- Presbyterian got on the board at the 9:23 mark but the Eagles struck back with consecutive goals by Jordan Ball and Claire Witmer.
- Presbyterian answered with two straight goals but the Eagles took their lead back to three on goals by Erin Whitaker and Dutton.
- The Eagles would lead 6-3 at the end of the quarter.
- Winthrop did not score in the second quarter while the Blue Hose scored three straight goals of their own to tie the score just before the half.
- Presbyterian scored the first goal nearly minutes into the second quarter but neither team scored again for nearly nine minutes.
- The Blue Hose then tied the game at six with 37 seconds left in the half.
- The hosts scored nearly two minutes into the second half, taking their first lead of the game.
- Presbyterian eventually extended their lead to three at 9-6 with nearly three minutes left in the third quarter.
- Ball ended both Winthrop's scoreless drought and PC's run with a goal with 1:26 left in the frame and on the next Eagle possession Katie Witmer made it a 9-8 game going into the fourth quarter.
- Gabby Pierpont tied it at the 11:40 mark of the fourth quarter and Scarlet Cifarelli vaulted Winthrop into the lead with 9:17 remaining.
- The Eagle defense made it stand up; holding the Blue Hose scoreless for the final 18 minutes of the game after the home team went up 9-6 near the end of the third period.
- Lexi Johnson sealed the deal with a free position shot inside of a minute.
NOTABLES (TEAM)
- Winthrop had more shots on goal, 20-18.
- The two teams were tied in saves, 9-9.
- Winthrop held the edge in ground balls 14-11 and draw controls, 13-10.
- Seven different Eagles scored.
- Dutton, Johnson, Claire Witmer and Ball each had a pair of goals to lead the Eagles.
- Cifarelli led the way with three assists.
- Dutton had five shots on goal while on the defensive end.
- This is the first and only victory of the season that the Eagles have won in come-from-behind fashion.
- The victory snaps a six-game losing streak.
- The Eagles end the year 1-7 on the road.
- This is Winthrop's first true road win since a 20-14 victory at Wofford on Apr. 23, 2022.
- This was the final career game for eight Eagle seniors.
