SERIES HISTORY VERSUS HIGH POINT
This is the 17
th meeting between the Eagles and the Panthers with High Point leading the series 13-3. High Point has won the last nine meetings. The first meeting was on Apr. 5, 2013 with the Panthers winning 21-5 in High Point on the way to winning the first four meetings. Winthrop got their first win in the series on May. 1, 2015 in Rock Hill by a score of 11-10 and then beat the Panthers twice in 2016. In the twin victories that year, Winthrop won 14-13 on Apr. 24 and 10-7 on May 7, with both contests taking place in Rock Hill. The Panthers have won every meeting since. The most recent meeting took place in High Point last season, with the Panthers winning 13-12 in double overtime on Mar. 29. In that game, Winthrop forced overtime down six goals in the fourth quarter.
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
- Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.
- Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
- Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
- The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
- Winthrop is third in the Big South in shot percentage with .410 and leads the conference in woman-up goals per game with 1.89.
- Dutton leads the Eagles in goals with 14 and assists with six.
- Katie Witmer leads the Eagles in shots on goal with 24.
- Madison Mayer leads the Eagles in draw controls with 37. She is also second in the conference in this category.
- Mayer leads the Eagles in caused turnovers with nine.
- Emma Calhoun leads the Eagles in groundballs with 22.
- She is also fifth in the conference in saves per game with eight.
LAST TIME OUT
- Winthrop fell just short in a physical defensive battle at Radford in the Eagles' second conference game of the year by a final score of 11-8 on Saturday afternoon.
- Five different Eagles scored.
- Taylor Bumstead led the way for Winthrop with three goals and five shots on goal.
- She also scored her first two career goals.
- Grace Herrero nabbed four ground balls.
- Katie Witmer won six draw controls.
- Winthrop won 14 draw controls to Radford's eight.
