Eagles Fall To Bucs In Series Opener

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop dropped the series opener with Charleston Southern in a 2-1 loss, Friday evening on Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Buccaneers took advantage of a two-out error to push two across in the first inning
  • The first came off a single up the middle that KaDedra Temple made a diving attempt to keep it in the infield but was just out of reach as Gracie Prince came around to score
  • After Weslin Jones stole second, Lacy Johnson hit a flare to right falling just in between Temple and Paige Rivas running on as Jones beat the throw home from Rivas
  • Eagles got their first runner in scoring position in the second inning as Ansley Lee was hit by a pitch with one out and then two batters later moved to second on a single to center by Grayson Buckner but was stranded
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Megan Powell drew a one out walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Ashley Wood
  • Lee then walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Bailey Warren to put two on with one out
  • Two batters later Buckner singled to right and Wood raced home to cut the deficit in half
  • With runners at the corners pinch-hitter Peyton Bryden put the ball in play but grounded out to third
  • Eagles had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Paige Rivas led off with a single to the left side
  • With one out Paige Rivas stole second to get the tying run into scoring position
  • But the Bucs Nealy Lamb was able to strike out Reese Basinger and Emma Jackson to end the game

EXTRA BASES
  • Paige Rivas picked up her 63rd career stolen base and now trails teammate Ashton VanHouse by two for 4th all-time and is four behind 3rd all-time
  • Reese Basinger struck out nine, which was her 4th appearance with nine or more strikeouts
  • The nine strikeouts give her 460 in her career, 22 back of 6th all-time

Bucs and Eagles will wrap-up the series on Saturday, Apr.20 with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
