Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off a 16-9 loss to Furman on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, the Winthrop women's lacrosse program (1-12, 1-5 Big South) hits the road for the final two contests of the 2024 season, first heading to the Peach State for a matchup with the Big South leading Bears of Mercer University (8-5, 5-0 Big South).

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS MERCER
This is the 8
th meeting between the Eagles and the Bears with Mercer leading the series 4-3. Mercer won the most recent meeting last season in 2023 by a final score of 20-7 on Apr. 5 in Macon, Ga and has won the last three meetings overall. The first meeting was on Mar. 25, 2018 with the Eagles winning 14-9 in the Peach State on the way to winning three of the first four meetings. The next year saw Winthrop win their first home game in the series 14-12 on Mar. 23. Mercer won their first game in the series on Feb. 29, 2020 16-15 in overtime in Macon only to see the Eagles strike back with a 14-11 victory in Rock Hill on Feb. 27, 2021, which was Winthrop's last win in the series to date.
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
- Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.
- Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
- Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
- The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
- Dutton leads the Eagles in goals with 22.
- Cifarelli leads the Eagles in assists with 15.
- Lexi Johnson leads the Eagles in shots on goal with 37.
- Madison Mayer leads the Eagles in draw controls with 61. She is also third in the conference in this category.
- Mayer leads the Eagles in caused turnovers with 12.
- Emma Calhoun leads the Eagles in groundballs with 31.
- She also is fourth in the conference in saves per game with 7.31.

- Winthrop fell on Senior Day last Saturday afternoon to the Furman Paladins by a final score of 16-9.
