Powell Hits 4th Home Run In League Play, Eagles Fall At Longwood

Farmville, Va. – Winthrop softball battled in a 10-6 loss at Longwood in the final game of the weekend Big South Conference series, Sunday afternoon.

RECORD: Winthrop (18-24, 5-7 Big South) | Longwood (14-25, 7-5 Big South)

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Eagles struck first as Ashton VanHouse led off the game with a single
  • VanHouse moved to second on a ground out by Reese Basinger
  • Emma Jackson followed with a walk to put two runners on
  • VanHouse and Jackson moved over on a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position
  • KaDedra Temple plated VanHouse with a sacrifice fly to left field for the early lead
  • Longwood tied it in the bottom of the first as Lauren Taylor homered to left with one out
  • Lancers then grabbed the lead on a fielding error with the bases loaded which led to two runs for a 3-1 advantage
  • The Lancers added one more for a 4-1 lead with a sacrifice fly from Maggie Hiatt
  •  In the top of the second, Kaylyn Little drew a one out walk and then was replaced by pinch-runner Peyton Rivas
  • Peyton Rivas stole second and then moved to third on a fly out to center from Grayson Buckner
  • Paige Rivas stepped in and singled up the middle to plate Peyton Rivas and pull the Eagles within two runs at 4-2
  • In the bottom of the second, the Lancers pushed three more across with two outs behind a two-run double from Sophia Knock and RBI double from Korynna Anderson
  • In the top of the third the Eagles tried to chip away at the deficit
  • Jackson singled with one out and then she stole second to get into scoring position
  • Two batters later Megan Powell singled to left as Jackson race home but was out at the plate
  • Longwood added another run in the 3rd and 5th innings, both solo home runs from Hiatt
  • In the top of the sixth, Jackson and Temple drew back-to-back walks to start things off
  • Then Powell stepped in and blasted a three-run home run to left to pull the Eagles within four runs at 9-5
  • Eagles had a chance to add more with two outs as Buckner singled and then Paige Rivas drew a walk
  • VanHouse came through with an infield single and an errant through allowed Buckner to come around to score while Rivas moved to third and VanHouse ended up on second
  • Basinger put the ball in play but grounded out to 1st
EXTRA BASES
  • Buckner pushed her hitting streak to three straight games with her single in the sixth and has now hit safely in eight straight games in league play
  • Jack extended her streak of reaching base in conference play to nine straight games
  • With her three-run home run in the sixth inning, Powell reached 100 career RBI in her collegiate career
  • Temple extended her streak of reaching base to six games
ON DECK
Eagles step away from conference play and head to Clemson, S.C. on Tuesday, Apr. 16 to take on nationally-ranked Clemson at 6 p.m.
