Rock Hill, S.C. – The Winthrop women's lacrosse program (0-5) heads to California for two games, first facing the Golden Bears in Berkeley on Sunday afternoon, seeking their first win on the season.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS CALIFORNIA
This is the 2
nd meeting between the Eagles and the Golden Bears. Cal is currently 1-5. Their only win was against Akron on Feb. 9, 19-10 at home. Their most recent game was a 15-4 loss at home to Army on Wednesday. The only other meeting between Winthrop and California was an 11-7 loss to the Golden Bears in Rock Hill on Feb. 23, 2020.
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
- Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.
- Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
- Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
- The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
- Winthrop is 100-99 all-time as a program, the second most wins in overall Big South women's lacrosse history.
- Winthrop leads the Big South in shot percentage with .463 and woman-up goals per game with 2.20.
- Lexi Johnson leads the Eagles in goals with 11.
- Cifarelli leads the Eagles in assists with five.
- Johnson and Katie Witmer lead the Eagles in shots on goal with 15.
- Madison Mayer leads the Eagles in draw controls with 19. She is also third in the conference in this category.
- Mayer and Johnson lead the Eagles in caused turnovers with five.
- Emma Calhoun leads the Eagles in groundballs with 11.
LAST TIME OUT
- Seven different Eagles put the ball in the back of a net in a home loss to Stonehill by a final score of 26-19 on Wednesday afternoon, wrapping up a season-high three-game home stand for the Eagles.
- Katie Witmer led the Eagles with six goals and shots on goal with seven.
- Winthrop scored a season-high in goals.
- Three different Eagles also scored more than three goals.
- Winthrop had eight saves to Stonehill's four.
- Johnson and Mayer each forced four turnovers.
- Mayer also won eight draw controls
