Statesboro, Ga. – Strong pitching highlight the opening day of the Hail Southern Classic as Winthrop softball splits with a 1-0 loss to Buffalo before earning a 2-0 win over Georgia Southern on Friday.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Buffalo
- The game was scoreless until Buffalo managed to get on the board in the top of the sixth inning
- Abbey Nagel led off the sixth with a single to center and then Alexi Lucyshyn drew a walk
- Two batters later Lily Lauck walked to load the bases followed by a bases loaded walk to Tianna Williams to plate pinch-runner Hannah McGonigle
- Eagles had their first base runner in the fourth as Paige Rivas drew a lead off walk but trying to get into scoring position she was called for leaving early
- In the fifth Reese Basinger drew a one out walk but a line out to 1st turned into a double play to end the inning
- Megan Powell tossed a complete game allowing the one run on one hit with six walks and two strikeouts
vs. Georgia Southern
- After the teams were scoreless through five innings the Eagles pushed one across in the top of the sixth
- Lily Stump led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch
- KaDedra Temple stepped in and delivered a double to right center to score Stump
- Eagles added another run in the top of the seventh
- Basinger set the table with a lead off walk and moved to second on a ground out by Peyton Bryden
- After moving to third on a passed ball, two batters later Temple grounded to short by the ball was misplayed by the shortstop allowing Temple to reach safely and Basinger to cross the plate
- Basinger was nearly in complete command as she allowed just three hits, issued no walks an struck out 10
EXTRA BASES
- Basinger reached 10 strikeouts in an outing for the second time this season and the 11th time in her career
- In the process she surpassed 400 career strikeouts, becoming the 9th pitcher in program history to reach 400
ON DECK
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday, Mar. 9 as they'll start the day against Buffalo at 11 a.m. and then face Georgia Southern at 1:30 p.m.
