Eagles To Play Radford In Quarterfinals Of Big South Tournament Thursday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off ending the regular-season with a huge second half at Gardner-Webb by a final 72-54 on Saturday afternoon, Winthrop women's basketball (14-15, 8-8 Big South) takes on Radford in the quarterfinals of the Hercules Tires Big South Conference Women's Basketball Championship at the Qubein Center on the campus of High Point University in High Point, N.C. The game will be on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. on ESPN+.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS RADFORD
This is the 89th meeting between the Eagles and the Highlanders, with Radford leading the series, 68-20. The first meeting between the two teams was on Jan. 19, 1984, with Radford winning 79-62 in Rock Hill on the way to winning the first 33 meetings. The Eagles notched their first win in the series on Feb. 17, 1999 at home by a score of 78-53. In the last seven encounters, Winthrop leads 4-3. Winthrop split two meetings with Radford this season, falling 63-55 in Radford on Jan. 13 but winning the re-match 54-51 in overtime on Feb. 14 in Rock Hill.

 BIG SOUTH WEEKLY HONORS
  • Marissa Gasaway-Big South Player of the Week (Dec. 4)
  • Averaged a double-double with 19.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in two games.
  • Opened the week with a career-high 20 points and 16 rebounds in an overtime setback to UNC Wilmington, her second double-double of the season.
  • Nearly notched another double-double against Queens as she finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
  • She shot 50.0 percent from the floor (13-of-16) and 13-of-17 from the free throw line (76.5 percent) for the week.
2024 ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
  • Gasaway garnered honorable mention after a season in which she finished 1st in the Big South and the team in rebounds per game with 10.3. She had a conference leading individual game-high 18 rebounds vs. High Point on Feb. 28. Gasaway played in all 29 regular-season games, leading Winthrop in free throws made with 78 and most notably nine double doubles. Gasaway also had 16 games in double figures in rebounds and 13 games in double figures in points. She was named the Big South Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played Nov. 27-Dec. 3.
  • Ryce was also named honorable mention and was named to the all-academic team. Ryce concluded the regular-season finishing 4th in the Big South in free throw percentage with .786 and in steals per game with 1.7. She also finished 8th in the conference in minutes per game with 31.7 and 9th in the conference in assists per game with 2.4. Ryce's best game was against Carolina University at home on Dec. 10, 2023. Ryce had a conference leading individual game-high 10 steals in that contest. This came within one steal of tying the school record for steals in a single game. Ryce played in all 29 regular-season games, leading the team in blocks with 50 and had 17 games in double figures in points. Ryce surpassed 500 career points vs. Charleston Southern on Jan. 24. The business major currently has a GPA of 3.792.
