Radford, Va. – Winthrop split a doubleheader at Radford Saturday afternoon to claim the Big South Conference series, 2-1. The Eagles dropped game one 7-3 before capping off the day with a thrilling 11-10 victory thanks to a seventh-inning grand slam by
Megan Powell.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Highlanders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as K. Shedrick hit a two-run shot to center
- Eagles got one back in the top of the fourth as Ashton VanHouse singled to center to lead off and then stole second
- Two batters later Reese Basinger singled up the middle to score VanHouse
- Radford reestablished a two-run lead (3-1) when Rachel Smith hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom half of the fourth
- Highlanders scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-1
- Megan Powell led off the top of the seventh with a single up the middle and was replaced at first by pinch-runner Ashley Wood
- Ansley Lee was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs as she was replaced by pinch-runner Lily Stump
- Kaylyn Little was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Grayson Buckner came through with a single up the middle to score one run and trail 7-2
- Emma Jackson drew a two-out walk to plate pinch-runner Olivia Martin to make it 7-3 in favor of Radford
Game 2
- Eagles carried the momentum from the seventh inning of game one into the first inning of game two
- Paige Rivas reached on an error to lead off the game and stole second
- VanHouse followed with a walk to two on with no outs
- After back-to-back outs, Temple stepped in and delivered a home run down the left field line for a 3-0 lead
- In the bottom of the second, the Eagles added three more runs as Lee got things started as she was hit by a pitch to lead off
- After being sacrificed to second by Peyton Bryden, Buckner singled to put runners at the corners
- With two outs, VanHouse walked to load the bases and Jackson followed with a walk to score the first run
- Basinger stepped up and singled to center, scoring both Paige Rivas and VanHouse for a 6-0 lead
- Highlanders responded in the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles to start off
- Natalie Jones hit a fly ball to shallow right as Temple ran out to make the catch and Smith tagged at third to score on the play
- That was all Basinger allowed in the inning as she recorded back-to-back foul outs to end the threat
- Powell led off the third inning with her second home run of the season, a shot over the center field fence
- Radford manufactured a run in the bottom of the third as Lexie Roberts singled to lead off and then stole second
- Abby Wilson reached on an error and then stole second to put two runners in scoring position
- Kari Shedrick grounded out to first as Roberts came across the plate to make it a five-run lead for the Eagles
- But for the second straight inning, Basinger settled down and retired the next two batters to end the threat, this time with back-to-back strikeouts
- Back-to-back two-out doubles in the fifth inning made it a three-run game as the Eagles led 7-4
- Radford made it a two-run game in the sixth as Jones led off with a home run to right
- That home run sparked a six-run inning as the Highlanders took the lead, 10-7
- Jackson led off the seventh with a single to left followed by a single from Basinger
- Temple singled up the middle to load the bases with no outs
- Powell stepped up and took a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left for a grand slam to put the Eagles back on top 11-10
EXTRA BASES
- Eagles posted 10 or more runs for the 3rd time this season and 3rd time in the last 14 games
- Winthrop had 11 hits, the fourth game with 10 or more hits this season
- In the second game of the doubleheader the Eagles hit a season-high three home runs
- Temple's streak of reaching base came to an end in game one, but she responded right back with a three-run home run in the first inning of game two
- Jackson extended her streak of reaching base to eight straight
- Basinger had two hits in each game and is now riding a six-game hitting streak
- In the three game series the Eagles had 11 stolen bases

Eagles step away from league play for as they head to Columbia, S.C. to take on nationally-ranked South Carolina in a single-game on Wednesday, Apr. 3 at 6 p.m.
