Radford, Va. – Winthrop (1-8, 1-1 Big South) fell just short in a physical defensive battle at Radford (4-7, 1-1 Big South) in the Eagles' second conference game of the year by a final score of 11-8 on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Highlanders scored the game's first five goals, all in the first quarter.
- Winthrop fought back in the second quarter, outscoring Radford 4-1 to trail by two at the half.
- Claire Witmer and Taylor Bumstead each scored a pair of goals to account for the Eagle scoring in the frame.
- For Bumstead, the two goals represented the first tallies of her Winthrop career.
- Witmer's first goal of the game came at the 12:35 and 3:00 mark.
- Bumstead's took place with 8:12 and 3:41 remaining, respectively.
- Radford scored the first goal of the second half four minutes in to take a 7-4 lead.
- Neither team scored for nearly 10 minutes until Radford scored with 3:23 left in the third quarter.
- Gabby Pierpont scored just before the third period ended to make it a three-goal affair.
- Lexi Johnson started the final 15 minutes of play with a goal on the man-up at the 12:45 mark.
- Two minutes later Ellie Dutton scored on a man-up opportunity to cut the lead to one.
- Radford responded with a goal but Bumstead scored at the 7:38 mark to once again make it a one-goal game.
- Winthrop could not answer and the Highlanders scored two more goals to effectively end the contest.
