Eagles Split On Final Day Of Bob Heck Classic

Atlanta, Ga. – Winthrop softball wrapped up play at the Bob Heck Classic on Sunday with a split as it fell 8-0 to Harvard and capped the day off with a 5-4 victory over Georgia State.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Harvard
  • The Crimson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Savannah Fitzpatrick led off with a single
  • Lauren Bobowski laid down a sacrifice bunt but the throw to first was off the mark as Bobowski ended up at second but Fitzpatrick was thrown out trying to reach third base on the play
  • Bobowski then scored on a double down the left field line by Douglas
  • Wohr's RBI single made it 2-0 but Wohr was thrown out trying to get to second on the play
  • Harvard manufactured a run in the second inning as Sun doubled to lead off, moved to third on a single and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead
  • A two-run double in the 4th inning by Bobowski put Harvard on top 5-0
  • Harvard added another run in the fifth and two more in the six
  • Emma Jackson drew a leadoff walk to start the sixth, but was out at second on a fielder's choice
  • Two batters later Grayson Buckner singled with two outs and moved to second while pinch-runner Peyton Rivas moved to third
  • Emma Roberson grounded out to third to end the threat

vs. Georgia State
  • Winthrop jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning
  • Paige Rivas singled to left to set the table and then stole second
  • Ashton VanHouse drew a walk to put two runners on
  • Two batters later Ansley Lee stood in and doubled to right center, scoring Paige Rivas and VanHouse
  • The Panthers got one back in the bottom of the first as Chloe Nadler singled with two outs, stole second and then scored on a wild pitch
  • Winthrop took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third as Reese Basinger doubled with two outs
  • Buckner stepped in and grounded to second but an error on the play allowed Buckner to reach and Basinger raced around to score
  • Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead
  • The first run came on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded
  • Jordan Rayner followed with a double to centerfield, scoring one run but the Eagles got the second runner trying to score
  • The go-ahead run came on a throw off the mark to first
  • In the top of the fifth, Megan Powell doubled to left center with one away
  • Roberson came in to pinch-run but it didn't matter much as two batters later Buckner took a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left center to take the lead
  • Basinger clamped down in the circle and retired nine of the next 10 batters to seal the win

EXTRA BASES
  • Paige Rivas finished with three stolen bases on the weekend and Ashton VanHouse had one
  • Both are now tied for 4th all-time and trail 3rd place by 10
  • Grayson Buckner returned to action this weekend for the first time since Feb. 16 and finished 4-for-8 at the plate with a run and two RBI
  • Reese Basinger inched closer to 400 career strikeouts and now had 393
  • Emma Jackson tied Basinger and Buckner for the most hits on the weekend with four and is now three hits away from 100 in her career while teammate Megan Powell is five away

ON DECK
The Eagles have a midweek matchup as they'll head to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. on Wednesday, Mar. 6 to take on the College of Charleston at 3 p.m.
