Radford, Va. – Winthrop overcame a 4-run deficit to earn a 7-5 victory over Radford in the opening game of a three-game series, Friday afternoon in Big South Conference softball action.

WHAT HAPPENED
	- Back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first put Radford on top 3-0
 
	- Cassi Barbato hit the first, a two-run shot to right field followed by a solo shot from Kari Shedrick
 
	- Emily Smith hit a one out solo home run in the bottom of the second for a 4-0 lead
 
	- In the top of the third, Paige Rivas led off with a single and then stole second to get into scoring position
 
	- Ashton VanHouse then singled to put runners at the corners
 
	- Rivas scored on a sacrifice bunt from Emma Jackson to get the Eagles on the board
 
	- That was followed by a double down the right field line by Reese Basinger, scoring VanHouse from second
 
	- KaDedra Temple singled to put runners at the corners and Megan Powell followed with a single to score Basinger to make it a one run game
 
	- Highlanders added a run in the fifth on a deep sacrifice fly down the left field line for a 5-3 lead
 
	- Eagles grabbed a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth inning as Jackson led off with a double to left
 
	- Basinger hit a grounder to short that took a high hop over the head off the shortstop as Jackson moved to third and Basinger was safe to put runners at the corners
 
	- Basinger stole second and then Temple came through with a double to right to score both runners and tie the game 5-5
 
	- Later in the inning Grayson Buckner singled off the first baseman's glove as the ball went into foul territory and Temple came home to score
 
	- On the same play, pinch-runner Ashley Wood tried to score on the same play and was just thrown out as the Eagles tried to add to the lead
 
	- Paige Rivas drew a leadoff walk to start the sixth and then stole second
 
	- After moving to third on a passed ball, Rivas eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jackson to lead 7-5
 
	- Basinger, who started the game in the circle and was relieved after two innings, returned in the seventh to hold off the Highlanders and earn the save
 
	- Mackenzie Smith tossed 4.0 innings of relief to earn the win as she allowed one run on one hit and had two strikeouts to four walks
 
EXTRA BASES
	- Eagles had a season-high four doubles and posted 10-plus hits for the 4th time
 
	- Paige Rivas had two steals in the game, her 8th game on the year with multiple steals
 
	- With the two steals Paige Rivas reaches 60 in her Winthrop career, only the 5th Eagle all-time to reach 60 or more steals
 
	- With her two doubles in the game, Temple now has eight on the season which is a career-best
 
	- Both teams combined for 16 runners left on base (Radford 9 / Winthrop 7)
 
	- Eagles had five stolen bases in the game, tying a season-high which they achieves in the season-opener vs. North Carolina A&T
 
	- Temple extended her streak of reaching base to 12 straight games and Jackson has now reached safely in six straight

The two teams will complete the series on Saturday, Mar. 30 with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
