Kings Point, N.Y. – Winthrop fell to St. John's in the opening game of a three-game series with the Red Storm by a final score of 6-0 Friday afternoon at the home field of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Winthrop moves to 11-13 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Winthrop began the afternoon with a triple by Evans but four plays later Harrison Wilson flew out to end the inning.
• St. John's loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the first but Huge got out of the jam by striking out the side.
• The Red Storm struck home in the next inning on two RBI singles by Tucker and Mayberry.
• Evans threatened to get the Eagles on the board in the third with two outs after Alan Benhardt grounded out to second, moving Evans to third base.
• But Nicholas Badillo struck out to end the frame.
• Mayberry's RBI triple in the fourth extended the lead to 3-0 for St. John's.
• Scavelli made it 4-0 in the fifth inning on an RBI single.
• In the sixth St. John's pushed the margin to six on an RBI double by Mayberry and an RBI groundout by Orbon to score Mayberry.
• The score remained the same the rest of the way.

Winthrop faces St. John's tomorrow in a doubleheader with the first game starting at 11 a.m. that will be seven innings and 1:30 p.m. that will be nine innings. Both games of the doubleheader will be on ESPN+.
