Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop (1-7, 1-0 Big South) used a fast start to open Big South play with a home win over Gardner-Webb (0-10, 0-1 Big South) 13-8 on Wednesday afternoon, securing their first win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles started the game by scoring three goals in the first three minutes, prompting a GW timeout.
- Winthrop kept it going, scoring two more goals in the period to take a 5-2 lead at the end of 15 minutes of play.
- Grace Taylor scored two goals in the frame to lead the Eagles.
- After the visitors opened the second quarter with a goal, Winthrop scored three unanswered goals to take an 8-3 lead going into the intermission.
- Neither team scored for the first 10 minutes of the third quarter until Emily Hollinger scored her first career goal in the Garnet and Gold at the 4:54 mark, putting the Eagles up six.
- Gardner-Webb responded with a goal a minute later but Gabby Pierpont put one in the back of the net with 2:36 remaining to restore the margin back to six.
- Winthrop would lead 10-5 at the end of the quarter.
- Each team would score three goals in the fourth quarter to account for the final margin of victory.
- Claire Witmer scored twice in the quarter, including on the man-up with 11:25 left to make the score 12-6.
- Madison Mayer scored with one second left to end the day.
- This was her first collegiate goal.
