Rock Hill, S.C.. – Winthrop softball split a doubleheader against East Tennessee State, Tuesday afternoon at Terry Field. The Eagles opened the day with a 5-3 victory before falling 2-1 in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Buccaneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Brylee Mesusan led off with a bunt single and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly
- Eagles took the lead with a three-run third inning
- Grayson Buckner's two-run double with one out put the Eagles in the lead
- Paige Rivas made it 3-1 as she singled up the middle to score Buckner from second
- ETSU made it a one-run game in the top of the third as Mesusan led off with a bunt single
- Cameron Young followed with a double off the glove of Buckner at third, putting two runners in scoring position
- Riley Nayadley singled to left to scored Mesusan
- Megan Powell entered the game in the circle and was able to the Eagles out of the inning
- Bucs tied the game in the fifth when Young hit a leadoff home run to right center
- Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Paige Rivas walked with one out and was sacrificed to second by Ashton VanHouse
- Reese Basinger stepped in and single through the right side as Paige Rivas raced around to score for a 4-3 lead
- Winthrop added another run in the sixth as Ansley Lee led off with a triple to right and was replaced by pinch-runner Emma Roberson
- KaDedra Temple took an 0-2 pitch to right field, scoring Roberson for a two-run cushion
Game 2
- ETSU pushed two runs across in the third to grab the lead
- The Bucs loaded the bases and a wild pitch moved all of the runners over and across for the first run
- The second run came on a Faith Adams sacrifice fly to center
- Winthrop loaded the bases in the bottom of the third but unable to push any runs across
- Temple led off the fourth with a double to right center, but was left stranded
- Eagles cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth as Basinger took the first pitch over the fence in right field to trail 2-1
EXTRA BASES
- Basinger's home run in game two of the doubleheader was the first of her collegiate career
- Megan Powell had six strikeouts in relief in game one of the doubleheader, pulling her seven shy of 400 in her career
- Temple extended her streak of reaching base to 11 straight games
ON DECK
Eagles are on the road for a Big South Conference series as they head to Radford, Va. Mar. 29-30. The series opens Friday, Mar. 29 at 4 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 30 starting at noon.
