SERIES HISTORY VERSUS GARDNER-WEBB
This is the 10
th meeting between the Eagles and the Runnin' Bulldogs, with Winthrop leading the series 7-2. Gardner-Webb has won the last two meetings after Winthrop had won the first seven matchups. The first meeting was on Apr. 6, 2015 with Winthrop winning 21-4 in Rock Hill. The most recent meeting took place in Boiling Springs, N.C. last season, with Gardner-Webb winning 15-10 on Apr. 26. Winthrop will be seeking their first win in the series since 2021, a pair of victories that year. The Eagles won 17-10 on the road on Mar. 28 and then won the re-match in Rock Hill 21-11 a month later on Apr. 24.
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
- Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.
- Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
- Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
- The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
- Winthrop is third in the Big South in shot percentage with .406 and leads the conference in woman-up goals per game with 1.86.
- Dutton leads the Eagles in goals with 13.
- Cifarelli leads the Eagles in assists with six.
- Katie Witmer leads the Eagles in shots on goal with 20.
- Madison Mayer leads the Eagles in draw controls with 29. She is also second in the conference in this category.
- Johnson and Mayer both lead the Eagles in caused turnovers with six.
- Emma Calhoun leads the Eagles in groundballs with 16.
LAST TIME OUT
- Winthrop ended non-conference competition with a loss at Cal-Davis by a final score of 18-7 on Tuesday. Mar. 12.
- The two teams were even in saves, 12-12.
- Winthrop won 14 draw controls to Cal-Davis's 13.
- Johnson led the Eagles with five shots.
