Eagles Score Early And Often In Defeat Of Wofford, Hit Three Home Runs

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop scored in every inning but two and clobbered three home runs, rolling to a 16-6 win over Wofford at home Tuesday afternoon. With the win, Winthrop moves to 11-12 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the bases loaded with one out for Wofford to start the game, Daniel Jackson grounded into a double play to keep the game scoreless.
  • Wofford tacked on the game's first two runs on an error and a Jack Renwick RBI single in the top of the second.
  • Winthrop exploded for five runs in their half of the inning.
  • The scoring binge started with one out as Luke Hannum tripled down the right field line to drive in Nate Chronis and Will Dorrell.
  • On the next play Chazz Grossington singled to right field to bring home Hannum.
  • Anthony Ruocco capped it off with a two-run homer to left field.
  • Wofford trimmed the lead to one in the top of the third on Tyler Hare's two-run home run to right field with two outs.
  • The Eagles made the score 6-4 in the bottom of the frame as Harrison Wilson scored while Chronis was grounding into a double play.
  • The Terriers once again made it a one-run game in the top of the fourth when Andrew Mannelly singled to score Tyler Bak.
  • With the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Dorrell drew a walk and scored Alan Benhardt.
  • On the next play, Chronis singled to right field to bring in Wilson and Nicholas Badillo, extending the Eagles lead to 9-5.
  • David Wiley's RBI double down the left field line with one out in the top of the fifth scored Jackson and cut the lead to three.
  • Then with the bases loaded with two outs two plays later, Eagle relief pitcher Parker Whittle prevented the Terriers from getting closer with an inning-ending strikeout.
  • In the bottom of the sixth Badillo and Cole Griffith homered to left field to increase Winthrop's margin to 13-6.
  • Griffith's was a three-run shot.
  • Grossington also came home to score on a wild pitch.
  • In the bottom of the seventh with one out, Dorrell flew out to bring home Colin Lombardo, making the score 15-6.
  • Benhardt ended the game via run-rule with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Ricky Teel.
