Eagles Split Doubleheader With Gardner-Webb

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball split a home doubleheader in the finale of a three-game Big South series with Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon, winning 3-0 in the first game but dropping the second contest 5-1. With the split, combined with yesterday's 2-1 victory, the Eagles have taken the season series from the Runnin' Bulldogs.

WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • With Jackson and VanHouse at second and third, respectively to start the first game with one out, grounded out to end the inning.
  • Two innings later, Jackson fouled out to left field to bring VanHouse home, putting the Eagles on the board first.
  • Two plays later, Powell homered to left field to increase the lead to 2-0.
  • The Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Jackson bunted to score VanHouse again.
  • Powell shut down the Gardner-Webb offensive unit for the entirety of the game, allowing only two hits.
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Gardner-Webb scored first to start the second game when Maure Pendleton came home to score on an error by Lily Stump.
  • Winthrop tied the score in the third when Jackson flew out to left field to bring in Temple.
  • Gardner-Webb scored four runs in the seventh inning to break the tie and win the second contest.
EXTRA BASES
Basinger pitched the entire second game, recording four strikeouts and now has 429 career strikeouts, good for 8th on the all-time list.
 
In what will continue to be a back-and-forth affair on the season, VanHouse had two steals on the day and is currently third on the all-time list with 62 (teammate Paige Rivas has 58)

ON DECK
Winthrop welcomes East Tennessee State Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader. The series begins at 2 p.m. with the second game to follow at 4 p.m. The series will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
