Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball split a non-conference doubleheader at home vs. Queens as the Eagles fell 8-4 in the first game before returning the favor with an 10-4 victory in the second game on Wednesday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- To start the day, Roxanne Hensel grounded out to second on a bunt and allowed Ashlyn Mickler to advance to second with one out.
- Eagles starting pitcher Sarah Trosin induced two straight outs to end the top half of the first.
- Queens once again got into scoring position in the next inning when Trosin walked two batters with one out.
- However, Trosin got out of the frame with two more outs, keeping the game scoreless.
- The visitors loaded the bases with one out in the third after Kayla Smith singled on a bunt, putting the Royals in great position to score first.
- Queens capitalized on the opportunity, tacking on five runs.
- Abby Craver was hit by Eagle relief pitcher Megan Powell, bringing Mickler home.
- Brooke Piper got Hensel to come home on an error by KaDedra Temple.
- Smith just beat out a throw to home on Kiana Termine's fielder's choice.
- Powell then walked in Craver when Kasidi Staley came up to bat.
- Kaylee DeJesus hit a sac fly to right field to bring in Piper.
- The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs in the frame.
- It started when Ashton VanHouse reached on an error by Smith, loading the bases with two outs.
- Reese Basinger's single drove in Paige Rivas and Temple on the next play.
- However, Queens once again loaded the bases in the top of the fourth when Powell walked Piper with one out.
- Hensel came in to score on an error by Grayson Buckner.
- On the next play, Madison Cantoni lined out to left field to score Smith.
- In the top of the fifth, Mickler stole second with two outs but Smith lined out to end the inning.
- The Eagles continued to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the inning.
- VanHouse's groundout got Peyton Rivas and Temple into scoring position at second and third.
- Basinger's two-run single got them home on the next play.
- In the sixth, Buckner got Ashley Wood to third on a groundout but Peyton Rivas struck out looking to end the threat.
- The Royals concluded the first game in the seventh when Juhles Kelly's RBI groundout scored Madyson Daughtry, making the score 8-4.
Game 2
- In the first inning, Smith doubled down the left field line to score Mickler.
- Two plays later, after Smith stole third, Lindsey DeRoeck batted in Smith to make the score 2-0.
- In the Eagle half of the inning, Basinger made it to third on a single with two outs but Powell grounded out to Smith to end the frame.
- In the next inning, with the bases loaded with one out, Temple doubled to right center to drive in three runs and put the Eagles in the lead for the first time.
- In the top of the third, DeRoeck found herself at second base but Basinger quickly got two outs to get the Eagles defensive unit off the field.
- Winthrop extended their lead in the bottom of the inning on Ansley Lee's RBI double, scoring Peyton Rivas all the way from first.
- The Royals cut the Winthrop lead to one in the fourth when Daughtry scored on Mickler's RBI single.
- But Winthrop responded with three runs in their half of the inning, making the score 7-3.
- Lilly Stump led the inning off with a solo shot to left field.
- Then with VanHouse and Temple on second and third with two outs, Lee singled through the left side to bring home VanHouse and Temple.
- With Piper on second with no one out in the fifth, Basinger got two quick outs to end the threat.
- Winthrop made it a five-run margin at 8-3 in the bottom of the inning on VanHouse's RBI single up the middle.
- DeJesus scored on a passed ball in the sixth with two outs for the Royals.
- Winthrop wrapped up the second game on RBI singles by Stump and Temple.

Basinger pitched the entire second game, recording eight strikeouts and now has 419 career strikeouts to move into 8th on the all-time list

Winthrop will be home Mar. 23-24 as it takes on Gardner-Webb in its first Big South home series of the season. The series begins Saturday, Mar. 23 with a doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. The series will wrap-up on Sunday, Mar. 24 with game three scheduled for 1 p.m.
